READ IN DESIGN: THE WELLCOME LIBRARY

Il giovedì diventa collaborativo! E si apre a quei luoghi, non più solo scozzesi ma del mondo, che invitano alla lettura. Si tratterà ancora di librerie ma anche di spazi che, per come sono stati pensati e creati, chiedono all'uomo di fermarsi e immergersi, nell'ambiente e nelle parole, per cinque minuti o dimenticandosi del tempo. Da qui la fusione tra The Sleepy Hamlet e dimmidicasa, tra Letteratura e Interior Design, tra due blog con uno stesso concetto: il benessere della persona.

 Gli spazi da cui vogliamo partire sono quelli, per troppo tempo svalutati, delle biblioteche. Quand'è stata l'ultima volta che vi siete seduti sulla poltrona (se c'era) di una biblioteca? Un passo indietro: quand'è stata l'ultima volta che ci siete entrati? Speriamo che per tutti la risposta non conduca alle ricerche che si era obbligati a fare alle elementari... Nel caso, è il momento di tornare a varcare la soglia di questi regni, e goderne.

 Quella che vi presentiamo oggi, per partire in grande stile, è la Reading Room di una biblioteca medica londinese: The Wellcome Library,dal nome del rappresentante farmaceutico che a fine '800 cominciò a collezionare qui libri di medicina. Dopo vari spostamenti per Londra, nel 2007 i libri tornano al 187 di Euston Road, nel loro edificio originale, e diventano di fruizione pubblica. L'obiettivo che si pone la biblioteca è l'esplorazione delle infinite connessioni tra medicina, arte e vita nel passato, nel presente e nel futuro. E' avendo ben chiaro questo punto che lo studio di architetti londinese AOC si è dedicato alla progettazione di questa sala di lettura, che invoglia a mettersi comodi, rilassarsi e scegliere un volume, anche solo per sfogliarlo. E a sorprendervi non saranno solo i libri o l'ambientazione ma l'incredibile collezione di manufatti, dall' alchimia alla stregoneria, che Mr. Wellcome ha radunato negli anni.
Come le biblioteche in genere, è aperta a tutti e l'entrata è libera. A quando la prima visita?

From now on Thursday becomes a synergistic day! This new column wishes to take into consideration those places that invite people to read. We will keep on dealing with bookshops, but also with those spaces conceived and created in order to let the individuals lose themselves in the environment as well as in words, be it for a minute or a while. Here begins the fusion between The Sleepy Hamlet and Dimmi di Casa, between Literature and Interior Design, between two blogs based on the same philosophy: the person's well-being.

We would like to get it started by focusing on libraries, as we consider them as spaces that have been underestimated for too long. When was the last time you were sitting on an armchair (if there was one) in a library? Hold on, I will step back: when was the last time you entered a library? We all hope the answer would not lead to some primary school times... Should that be the case, it is time for a twist in the tale and to walk through the door again. Enjoying the pleasure.

 The Reading Room of The Wellcome Library is going to be our first key player. Situated in London, it is a medical library whose name goes back to the pharmaceutical salesman who began collecting here medical books and artefacts (about alchemy and witchcraft) at the end of nineteenth century. After years of moving books around London, the volumes were finally moved back to their historic home at 187, Euston Road. Both the Library and the Collection aim at "exploring the connections between medicine, life and art in the past, present and future". It is with this target in mind that AOC (a practice of architects and designers based in East London) had projected this reading room; a room inviting you to make yourself at home, relax and choose a book, be it only to leaf through it. The surrounding environment will leave you astonished.
As most libraries, The Wellcome Library is free and for anyone to enter. So, ready to pay a visit?

DINNER WITH THE AUTHOR

We said we would be back with a new column in September... and we did! As you may assume from the title a writer is going to be the protagonist, together with you, my dear reader. Which writer would you fancy sharing a table with? I have recently been back to the Highlands and decided that I had to start again  my new column in this beloved place.  So, here is   Mairearad - a Highlander, an artist, a friend. Who's the author she has chosen?  Well, Mairearad  has just had a delicious lemon drizzle  cake and some coffee with... Elizabeth K Reeder !She's a Professor of  Creative Writing at Glasgow University and she wrote the two books you see on the table: "Ramshackle" and "Fremont". Mairearad met her for real on the Isle of Skye for a Folk Music Festival (Small Halls) and said this woman has been amazing to speak with and  a great source of ispiration, that is why she would choose her for an afternoon tea! IN VIAGGIO CON...FRANCESCA
